What is it and why do we care?  If we look up this word using the on-line website, Dictionary.com, we find the following..... Click here

Perhaps this YouTube Video will help us understand....

This issue is becoming more and more serious as we enter this Web 2.0 world.  We are a click away from finding information, both good and bad, on the internet.  It is our academic responsibility to properly cite our sources, or we can consider ourselves a common thief.  Plagiarism is really the act of stealing - stealing someone else's work.  And there is a lot of work easily found on the internet.  Just because this information or work is easy to get, doesn't mean that we can help ourselves.

So what exactly is Plagiarism?

Here is a Student Guide to avoid Plagiarism.

How would you get caught if you plagiarized?  There are many on-line tools that help teachers and professors find a cheater.  Here is a link to one website that many have used in the past to catch a thief.

Concluding Activities:

1) Read this short article briefly explaining what Plagiarism is by Kids Health.

2) Now that you have read some articles on what plagiarism is, complete the "You Quote It, You Wrote It" activity with your elbow partner.

**TICKET OUT THE DOOR**After our lesson on plagiarism, get a sheet of paper from Mrs. Jackson and write down ONE new thing you learned about plagiarism today. ie - what it is, different types of it, how not to do it, why it is important etc.

So now you know, but how do I cite my sources after I directly quote or after I paraphrase?

Start by using

Owl at Purdue Writing Lab

or

Son of Citation Machine

A special thanks for Johanna Lawler for allowing me to use her sources!
